La Trobe University was the third to open in Victoria, providing a total of 552 students courses in plumbing and teaching in 1967. Now, the university has over 36,000 students enrolled, and a notable 170,000 past graduates and alumni. At La Trobe, the current graduate employment according to the Graduate Outcomes Survey 2016, was 94.1% overall. This means that within the four months of graduating a course at La Trobe, recently graduated students were able to gain employment, either full- time or part- time. This is above the national average of 93%. In terms of full- time employment, 78.9% of graduates were able to secure a job in the four months’ post- graduation. This however, is below the national average of 83.5%.
In terms of the survey, students at La Trobe indicated that their average full- time median salary was approximately $70,000. The national average, having completed a University course, s $80,000, much higher than the survey results for La Trobe.
There’s many different options available to study through La Trobe University. Short courses are on offer across areas in health, nursing, business, humanities and social sciences. If you’re after something more in- depth, there’s hundreds of subject fields available for study across undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. La Trobe University also focuses on including placement based subjects, so students can learn from industry professionals in a real- world setting. This also involves placement in partner organisations as well as integrated into the community. La Trobe University’s Melbourne campus is its largest of the campuses, located in the town of Bundoora, in Melbourne’s north-east. The Bundoora Campus is the centre of the La Trobe life, and filled with a diverse student community. It’s extensive grounds and buildings feature hundreds of activities, social events and studying spots for the 26,000 students it serves. There are many benefits of studying at the La Trobe Bundoora Campus, from its state-of-the-art buildings and equipment, to the many entertainment facilities it offers, there’s a reason why it attracts so many students from around Australia, and around the world every year.
Better yet, this campus caters to all areas of study that the university offers, including the faculties of health sciences, humanities and social sciences, law and management, science and technology as well as education. Some of the greatest features that help shape the university experience into an unforgettable one are below:
The La Trobe Art Institute’s Museum of Art (LUMA) is its pride and glory, featuring the university’s collection of art and cultural pieces. This Museum reflects La Trobe’s goal of acquiring and exhibiting art that demonstrates the diversity and cultural enrichment the University aims to always achieve. It’s a fantastic place to explore, and soak in all the talent and meanings behind a wide selection of art, sculptures and exhibitions by local and international artists. Tour through the Sculpture Park; an integral and hard-to-miss area of campus, which is filled with contemporary sculpture pieces created to expand the imagination.
If you were to ask any student studying at La Trobe where the heart of the campus was, they would all say that it lies in the Agora. Often referred to as the ‘Ag’, it sits right in the centre of campus, surrounded by the various buildings and facilities. It’s where all the students and staff on campus come to relax, socialise and enjoy their day with friends. It’s also filled with dozens of cafes and restaurants, as well as retail outlets. With a hairdresser, convenience store, bookshop, optometrist and post office all located right here, there’s almost no need to ever leave, and it’s the perfect area for students living on- campus.
The recently renovated library is one of the biggest in Victoria, covering three levels and housing more than 1.2 million books. It also has over 40,000 electronic and print versions of journals and articles, as well as AV material and a fully online database. It also offers a wide range of group and individual study spaces, projection rooms and group project areas to allow you to work on those assignments comfortable, and surrounded by the best resources available.
La Trobe values the social aspect of University, and is always trying to enhance this experience for all students. One of the great things of the Bundoora Campus is the Eagle Bar. Named after the La Trobe Eagle logo, this bar is a fantastic place of students and staff alike to unwind and relax after a busy day, and is fully equipped with an outside garden bistro, and can seat over 500 people. It regularly features live bands and music, and hosts a number of events throughout the year. So, no matter whether you’re after a quick bite to eat, a much- needed drink after an assignment or a place to catch up with friends and make new ones; the Eagle Bar is a valued commodity at La Trobe’s Bundoora Campus.
The La Trobe sports Centre, also known as UniSport, is the main provider of indoor, outdoor and other sports and recreational facilities, offered to all staff, students and the general public. It includes:
La Trobe is very well known for providing affordable, well-fitted accommodation to all students, with speciality rooms for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as select off- campus. Some campus accommodation is on a shared floor with a private bedroom, as well as full access to a study space and lounge as well as catered meals in the Dining Hall.
Located to the east of the Bundoora campus, Chisolm College resides 394 students, with single and shared bedrooms available. These rooms are self- catered, with communal kitchens as well as recreation areas. Pool tables, a mini cinema and a prime location are all the benefits of choosing this self- contained building.
Glenn College was fist opened in 1967, being the most historic of the La Latrobe accommodation buildings. It also includes the Glenn Dining Hall which serves breakfast and dinner to residents. The rooms are typically single bedrooms, with shared bathrooms, and if you don’t feel like using the dining hall, then a shared kitchen is also available. Equip with a theatre room, computer room and recreational area, there’s plenty to do if you’re one of the 346 residents of Glenn College.
Menzies College is found in the southern side of the Melbourne campus, and is similar to the Chisolm College in that it includes single rooms with shared bathrooms, as well as communal kitchens on every floor. The only difference about this residence is that it has a fitness centre and gymnasium available to all residents.
Bendigo is one of the largest cities in rural Victoria, with over 100,000 people currently calling it home. Of that population, La Trobe’s Bendigo campus is home to over 5000 students, making it La Trobe’s second largest. Bendigo campus is only three kilometres from the centre of Bendigo, and many students who take part in the courses if offers are involved in vocational education. Bendigo campus offers courses across business, event and sports management, engineering, information technology, law, nursing, allied health, outdoor education, pharmacy, psychological sciences and many more. It’s partnership with Bendigo TAFE also provides a fantastic opportunity to further your education after your vocational training through this pathway, and can even take some time off of your study.
Another masterpiece created by the La Trobe Art Institute, the visual Arts Centre at Bendigo Campus is the university’s cultural mission in Bendigo; showcasing different style art pieces which both act as a commentary on current ides, as well as beautiful creations to expand the imagination and inspire. It regularly hosts artist talks and lecture programs from local, national and international artists as well as offering state-of-the-art function rooms. It includes to galleries, two sculpture yards, an auditorium, meeting room and artist studio.
Bendigo is one of the agricultural and farming hot spots of rural Victoria, and the students that attend la Trobe university’s Bendigo Campus have incorporated that through the Community Garden program. The garden, commonly called ‘the patch’ features an assortment of plants and produce, which are both organically grown, cultivated and sold on campus. Not only is it a lovely spot to sit with friends, it’s also a fantastic place to learn the vital skills of growing and cultivating plants.
This state=-of-the-art fitness centre located on the Bendigo Campus offers 24/7 fitness services, and is fully equipped with all the equipment you need. It’s a popular spot for students, especially those who reside on campus, and is easily accessible year-round.
The Bendigo campus library is filled with everything you might need throughout your time studying at La Trobe Bendigo. It has thousands of titles, across all different mediums including books, journals, pee- reviews sources and articles. It also features plenty of study spaces available for group and individual use, as well as fantastic staff support to help you with everything from thesis writing and researching through to referencing for assignments. It also contains dozens of computer labs and monitors.
Located in the heart of Bendigo campus, the Clinic Health School is a state-of-the-art facility created to train and develop the next generation of health professionals. It’s used for students studying a range of health- related subjects, including nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology. This world-class centre contains simulation modules as well as labs and teaching spaces to ensure that health students have access to the absolute best in technology and equipment.
La Trobe’s Bendigo Campus can house up to 500 residents, and is available to undergraduate students. Accommodation types vary by room occupancy, catered or self- catering meals, as well as additional resources. The Hillside Apartments have meal catering as well as single rooms, the Terraces are furnished houses that can accommodate up to eight students, with the option to self- cater or have meals prepared. Units are also available, including a shared common area and communal kitchen, bathroom and laundry. There’s also the Villas, available upon interview to second, third and postgraduate students. Mature age students can also reside in the spacious Orde house, fully self- catered with shared facilities.
La Trobe University’s Albury- Wodonga Campus is considered one of the research hubs of the university, and has close relations to the joint township of Albury- Wodonga and surrounds. Many students who attend are local, and it’s a fantastic campus for those who live in rural locations who otherwise struggle to access the educational facilities and resources on offer.
The David Mann library has a great range of learning resources available to all students, including books, electronic journals and articles, databases and audio/visual materials. It also features plenty of learning spaces, computer workstations, internet access and print services. The library at La Trobe’s Albury- Wodonga Campus is available to the community at large, and is a shared with Wodonga TAFE.
The Valleys Restaurant is a great feature of the campus lifestyle, providing a great variety of food available for lunch to anyone on campus. What makes this facility so fantastic, is that it doubles as a training establishment for the university and Wodonga TAFE hospitality and even management students. Cookery and culinary arts students excel at creating a large selection of quality foods, and the event management students ensure that the dining experience is top class and able to train in a real- world environment.
La Trobe university has a large Health School, with many students being enrolled in nursing and healthcare education. To ensure these students, have access to the very best training equipment and facilities, it has a healthcare simulation centre at three of its rural campuses, including Albury- Wodonga. These centres have life-like hospital beds, clinical scenarios, and access to state-of-the-art high fidelity manikins which simulate symptoms or problems.
This highly- valued resource centre is a joint initiative between the CSIRO and La Trobe University, to better understand freshwater ecology and ecosystems. It also helps to play a pivotal role in water management systems and conserving the natural environment. This research centre plays a very important role for students in the agriculture and environmental studies, providing them with state-of-the-art technologies to be used directly within the natural environment of the water catchment.
There’s an option for everyone thinking about living on campus when they attend La Trobe at the Albury- Wodonga Campus. It’s separated into two different residences, the McFarlane’s Hill accommodation, and the East End residence. McFarlane’s Hill offers a total of 28 beds to students, with a shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry located on each of its two- storey buildings. The East End residence consists of twelve units which contain up to six bedrooms each. It contains a kitchen, laundry, bathroom and living area however there is a cafeteria located close by for meal options.
Mildura is a rural town located in the northern part of Victoria, close to the border of New South Wales. Like other rural campuses that form part of La Trobe, Mildura has a strong community focus, and provides several facilities to the general public. It’s partnership with Sunraysia TAFE also provides an easy and accessible pathway into Higher educational studies after the completion of a TAFE course, which can cut time off your study load by recognising prior learning.
The Gambetta Library has many different resources, including print collections and digital media to all students and the community at large. It also offers computers and study areas for group and individual use, as well as photocopying and printing resources.
Arts Mildura is a branch that runs a number of arts events throughout the year, including the Murray River Music Festival, Mildura Writers Festival and the Mildura jazz, Food and Wine Festival. La Trobe’s collaboration with Arts Mildura enables students studying visual, graphic and digital art to promote and showcase their skills and abilities, as well as get real feedback from experts in a professional setting.
Accommodation is available through the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE, only a matter of minutes from La Trobe University Mildura Campus. Up to 30 full-time students at La Trobe can live on- campus and short stays are also available.
Shepparton is one of the biggest of La Trobe’s Rural campuses, and plays a vital role in the city of Shepparton. It currently has almost 400 students enrolled across the many courses if offers, in areas including; accounting, agriculture, business, arts, English, education, health, HR, nursing, marketing, politics, sociology, speech pathology and paramedicine. It provides a pivotal role in the community, allowing the townspeople of Shepparton to access the range of facilities and services it offers, and promote the use of research and education to further the development of the town. It also offers pathway programs through GOTAFE, which can take up to a year off your higher educational studies after completing a relevant TAFE course.
The library, shared with Goulburn Ovens TAFE (GOTAFE) provides a few student study spacing, collaboration rooms, computer stations and access to printing and photocopying services. No matter what you need, whether help with referencing or report writing or looking for a specific title, the librarians at work are always available to help. There’s also a fantastic range of books and learning materials available across a wide range of subject fields.
Like other La Trobe campus healthcare simulations, Shepparton also features a dedicated Clinical Simulation Learning Centre (CSLC) to enhance the learning experience of students in the healthcare services, including nursing courses.
Focussing more on business professions, the city campus offers many state-of-the-art innovations and technology to provide only the best resources to students. The best thing about this campus is the immersive element of providing quality business education in the heart of Melbourne’s Business District. It also offers a range of fitted-out learning spaces, as well as meeting rooms to assist with individual and group study.

La Trobe Franklin Street Campus provides specially designed courses in health and legal faculties, across short and postgraduate studies. It houses three state-of-the-art facilities in healthcare, which are recognised for their contribution to developing highly- skilled graduates.
This research centre is especially designed to further not only studies in the health field, but also further research and development of understandings in areas including reproduction, HIV and hepatitis. Research is conducted through both the Master’s and Doctoral level qualifications, with no other postgraduate courses available.
The world- class facilities at the Palliative Care Unit provide an ability to derive more detailed understanding, education and research around the area of palliative care. This is a centre which can help develop ways to better the lives of patients and their families, and research supervision is also conducted.
This centre is focused on nursing and midwifery, and aims to address the importance of health in mothers and babies. The equipment, technology and training services in this centre are high-quality, and run qualification through research at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. It covers the education and research of areas including premature birth, labour, motherhood and women’s health as well as physical and psychological disorders origins.
Sydney is one of the most globally- recognised cities in the world, and attracts millions of tourists every year. With the rich cultural scene and dozens of famous tourist locations, there’s no city like it, and it’s one of the most popular student cities in the world. La Trobe University Sydney Campus offers courses mainly in business, including bachelor and master’s degrees as well as a variety of diploma and pathway programs.
Held regularly throughout the university year, La Trobe’s Sydney campus provides support to students in areas such as accounting, mathematics, IT, exam preparation, language and presentation skills. The Academic Skills Advisors who run this program are there to provide assistance and support, and to help students with assignment creation, report writing, referencing and exam preparation.
There’s many different services available throughout the year which help to shape the student experience and make it more enjoyable and easier for all. A career support service is accessible which provides one-on-one coaching to help develop interview and communication skills, as well as preparing for job searches. A range of counselling services are also available, as wel as La Trobe’s self- help resource for whenever you may need it, for personal, family or school-related matters. International students can also benefit from free legal services to address any issues with student visas. For those who wish to have one-on-one support with an experience student, and want to gain vital information to help with study and learning, there’s a mentoring program available as well.
La Trobe Sydney Campus houses an extensive library, with plenty of books, articles, journals and peer-reviewed material easily accessible. The campus also features computer labs as well as dozens of student study spaces and group collaboration rooms to assist with study and assignments. An independant learning area is also available throughout the university year, featuring an open space with plenty of seating and desks.
While there’s no on-campus accommodation, La Trobe still offers a few different methods of living, especially for international students. They run a homestay accommodation program for instance, which gives students the opportunity to experience living with a family in Australia for their time studying. Alternatively, there are off- campus self- contained apartments available, with the option of sharing a room, or having one to yourself. There are two locations for the Iglu Student Accommodation, located in Chatswood and central Sydney. both are accessible via public transport, and city-wide facilities.

The peak student body that governs La Trobe University is the La Trobe Student Union (LTSU), who act as the independent representatives of all students across the campuses in Melbourne, Bundoora, Shepparton and Mildura. the aim of the union is to better the learning experience of all students and actively promote the welfare of everyone at La Trobe.
